Right so I have this friend….
and for the purpose of this story he shall be called Dallas, and so Dallas sort of likes loves this beautiful girl named Sugar Land. Dallas first encountered Sugar Land in elementary school, and as with most boys at school, he was confounded by this beautiful new girl with her Rapunzel-like hair. Over the course of the year he watched her interact with her new setting, make new friends, and unfortunately develop new crushes. Dallas would watch her very stealthily, whilst playing soccer with his friends or walking around talking. Occasionally he would simply pretend to read, while watching her over the edge of his book’s cover. [Of course this is slightly highly creepy but again this is the innocence of young love]. After watching her for some time, he began devising plans in which he would try to approach her and hopefully if he got lucky, he would become her friend,[ and eventually her boyfriend]. He began trying to approach her through mutual friends, who had become extremely close to her over the year, but alas his crippling fear of Sugar Land’s disapproval paralyzed him with fear, and he was left to continue admiring her from afar. Eventually the school year began to come to an end, and the overwhelming desire for summer to begin filled the air with toxicity. Like most children even Dallas longed to be free to enjoy the carelessness of summer, however, Dallas did look back on his wasted attempts at trying to approach his [hypothetical] beau, and promised himself that he would make a real effort next year. With only a few weeks away from the end of the school year, Dallas began to relax and slowly ease into a summer-like routine. Unfortunately it was news of SugarLand that completely jolted him out of his summer haze: SugarLand had a boyfriend.
The world as Dallas had known ended, and all he could think about was this stupid idiot that was clearly not good enough for Sugarland. Hell! That guy barely knew her the way that he, Dallas, did! Dallas was enraged, but more importantly he was devastated that this could happen to him, when he had been clearly sending her signals all year. Hadn’t she noticed when he had always let her but him in line for the water fountain? Or the countless times he had lent her pencils, pens and other school supplies? Or what about the times he had… It clearly had no affect, and she hadn’t noticed his enormously insignificant efforts. Dallas had to revise his future plans of having a placid summer, and instead had to decide how he would insert himself into her life in the quickest way possible. The next few days Dallas began greeting Sugarland in the morning in his latest attempt to become her friend, and Sugarland would always respond politely before running off with her friends. Dallas began to feel disheartened after a few days of this, but it payed off when one of Sugarland’s friends began acknowledging Dallas. Dallas saw this blessed moment as an opportunity to finally become one of her friends, and so he and Reno began talking. Unfortunately, Dallas noticed that he may be friends with Reno, but there was still tonnes of work to be done before he could approach SugarLand. Reno did however, reveal that Sugarland’s “relationship” with Malibu was a disappointment : neither of them really knew each other, and had been forced together by Malibu’s friend Brooklyn. At that moment Dallas felt as if he could easily run around the school screaming at the top of his lungs, professing his nonsensical ecstasy. This news renewed Dallas’ hope of becoming Sugarland’s friend(plus more?). So Dallas continued to greet her in the mornings, in addition to saying goodbye to her at the end of the day, in the hopes of being the last thing she thought about on her walk home from school. Eventually, the last day of school came to an end and as usual Dallas waved goodbye to Sugarland, and began to walk away. This time he noticed that Sugarland began walking with him. Dallas instantly felt nervous, and became hyper aware of his body and how close Sugarland was walking next to him. Bizarrely enough, Sugarland continued to talk to Dallas and told him she had seen that he walked in the same general direction as her, but he had always rushed off before she could approach him. Dallas answered her rather coolly, telling her that he had to get home and watch his favourite t.v. show “Dave the Barbarian”. Sugarland looked at Dallas with her gentle blue eyes, and excitedly told him that she too watches the show. Dallas and Sugarland continued walking together talking and laughing, until they spotted Reno along with Malibu and some other schoolmates, standing in a group watching Sugarland and Dallas. Dallas recognized that he had inadvertedly offended Malibu by accidentally walking Sugarland home. Sugarland also noticed the social mistake she had made and quickly said goodbye to Dallas as she ran off to the group. Dallas walked away awkwardly and tried to put as much distance between himself and the potential love of his life. Once he was safely far away from the group, he stopped and collapsed in the shade of a tree, safely hidden behind the titanic trunk of the tree. Dallas thought about his walk with Sugarland and the quixotic moments he had spent with her. He knew he wouldn’t see her until the school year started up again and so he would have to cherish the way she smiled, laughed and walked for the rest of the summer, as if sipping a cool iced tea on the hottest day of the year.
